About IMS

IMS

IMS (Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem) defines a generic architecture for offering Voice over IP and multimedia services. IMS is one of the hottest topics in the telecommunication industry, with the aim to provide all the services, current and future, that the Internet provides. It was originally designed for mobile networks, but now even fixed networks are supported too. IMS has support for different types of multiple access technologies, including:

  • GSM
  • WCDMA
  • CDMA 2000
  • WLAN

IMS-based services will enable person-to-person and person-to-content communications in a variety of modes, including:

  • voice
  • text
  • pictures
  • video

Furthermore any of the above-mentioned modes can be combined in highly personalized and controlled way.

IMS has a huge business potential and it seems that most of the operators will be switching to the system in near future. This will create a big demand for applications for IMS as well as a demand for engineers skilled in IMS technologies.
